Our History

Founded in 1974, Silicon Valley Chinese School (SVCS) began as a single Chinese class established by Ms. Yue Shen, Mr. & Mrs. Chien-Min Lo, and several other Taiwanese IBM engineer parents seeking quality Chinese education for their children.

Key Milestones

• 1980: As student enrollment surpassed 100, the school relocated to Miller Middle School in West San Jose. It was officially registered with the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) as "South Bay Chinese School."

• 1983: Enrollment surged to over 400 students. The school formally registered with the California government as a non-profit organization and officially changed its name to Silicon Valley Chinese School (SVCS).

• 1990s: Following the high-tech boom and the influx of Chinese-speaking professionals to Silicon Valley, the school expanded rapidly, reaching over 1,000 registered students per academic year. To accommodate this massive growth, SVCS parents and teachers helped establish a branch school, "Siyuan Chinese School," at Monta Vista High School.

SVCS Today

Today, our student body has stabilized and grown increasingly diverse. Nearly 10% of our students come from non-Chinese speaking households or new immigrant families looking to maintain their heritage.

Our Programs

• Ages: Preschool through 12th Grade

• Tracks: Heritage (Native) and Non-Heritage (CSL - Chinese as a Second Language) classes (introduced in 2011).

• Schedule: Friday evenings (2–3 hours per session) over a 32-week academic year.

Our Mission: We aim to provide a solid learning environment that fosters a lifelong appreciation for Chinese culture. We actively engage with the local community to integrate Chinese education into the American mainstream school system.
