Chinese, a language spoken by more than a quarter of the population in the world, is said to be one of the most important languages to learn in the 21st century.
Since Fall 2011, Silicon Valley Chinese School started offering Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) program focusing on building a strong Chinese language foundation for students whose main language at home is not Mandarin. Courses specifically designed for the purpose of developing students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a practical sense.
CSL classes will be taught by an instructor fluent in both Chinese and English. Students begin by learning PinYin (a pronunciation system similar to the alphabet in English) and traditional Chinese characters and move on to learning words, sentences, and conversational skills.
The goal of CSL classes is to have a student’s Chinese language skill and knowledge to reach the US College Board AP (Advanced placement Program) Chinese proficiency level when the young learners reach 11th grade at High school.
The classes are:
CSL Level 1 (for 5 to 7 years old who have never taken Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 2 (for 6 to 12 years old who have taken 1 year of Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 3 (for 7 to 12 years old who have taken 2 years of Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 4 (for 9 to 13 years old who have taken 3 years of Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 5 (for 10 to 14 years old who have taken 4 years of Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 6 (for 11 to 15 years old who have taken 5 years of Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 7 (for 12 to 16 years old who have taken 6 years of Chinese lesson)
CSL Level 8 (for 13 to 16 years old who have taken 7 years of Chinese lesson)
